Biography of Annie Jump Cannon, Classifier of Stars

Life story of Annie Jump Cannon, Classifier of Stars Annie Jump Cannon (December 11, 1863â€April 13, 1941) was an American cosmologist whose work in star inventoriing prompted the improvement of current star grouping frameworks. Alongside her historic work in space science, Cannon was a suffragist and dissident for women’s rights. Quick Facts: Annie Jump Cannon Known For: American space expert who made the cutting edge star grouping framework and got things started for ladies in astronomyBorn: December 11, 1863 in Dover, DelawareDied: April 13, 1941 in Cambridge, MassachusettsSelected Honors: Honorary doctorates from University of Groningen (1921) and Oxford University (1925), Henry Draper Medal (1931), Ellen Richards Prize (1932), National Womens Hall of Fame (1994)Notable Quote: Teaching man his moderately little circle in the creation, it likewise empowers him by its exercises of the solidarity of Nature and gives him that his influence of perception partners him with the incredible knowledge over-arriving by any means. Early Life Annie Jump Cannon was the oldest of three girls destined to Wilson Cannon and his better half Mary (neã ¨ Jump). Wilson Cannon was a state representative in Delaware, just as a boat developer. It was Mary who empowered Annie’s training from the very beginning, showing her the groups of stars and urging her to seek after her inclinations in science and math. All through Annie’s youth, mother and girl stargazed together, utilizing old course books to distinguish and outline the stars they could see from their own storage room. At some point during her youth or youthful adulthood, Annie endured significant hearing misfortune, perhaps because of red fever. A few history specialists accept she was deaf from youth ahead, while others recommend that she was at that point a youthful grown-up in her post-school years when she lost her hearing. Her hearing misfortune allegedly made it hard for her to mingle, so Annie inundated herself all the more totally in her work. She never wedded, had kids, or had freely known sentimental connections. Annie went to Wilmington Conference Academy (referred to today as Wesley College) and exceeded expectations, especially in math. In 1880, she started concentrating as Wellesley College, outstanding amongst other American schools for ladies, where she examined cosmology and material science. She graduated as valedictorian in 1884, at that point got back to Delaware. Instructor, Assistant, Astronomer In 1894, Annie Jump Cannon endured a significant misfortune when her mom Mary passed on. With home life in Delaware getting progressively troublesome, Annie kept in touch with her previous educator at Wellesley, the physicist and stargazer Sarah Frances Whiting, to inquire as to whether she had any employment opportunities. Whiting obliged and employed her as a lesser level material science instructor which additionally empowered Annie to proceed with her training, taking alumni level courses in material science, spectroscopy, and cosmology. To keep seeking after her inclinations, Annie required access to a superior telescope, so she selected at Radcliffe College, which had an exceptional game plan with close by Harvard to have teachers give their talks both at Harvard and Radcliffe. Annie accessed the Harvard Observatory, and in 1896, she was employed by its chief, Edward C. Pickering, as a collaborator. Pickering employed a few ladies to help him on his significant undertaking: finishing the Henry Draper Catalog, a broad index with the objective of mapping and characterizing each star in the sky (up to a photographic size of 9). Subsidized by Anna Draper, Henry Draper’s widow, the undertaking took up critical labor and assets. Making a Classification System Before long into the task, a contradiction emerged over how to group the stars they were watching. One lady on the undertaking, Antonia Maury (who was Draper’s niece) contended for a perplexing framework, while another partner, Williamina Fleming (who was Pickering’s picked chief) needed a basic framework. It was Annie Jump Cannon who made sense of a third framework as a trade off. She separated stars into the otherworldly classes O, B, A, F, G, K, M-a framework which is still instructed to stargazing understudies today. Annie’s first index of heavenly spectra was distributed in 1901, and her profession quickened starting there on. She got a master’s qualification in 1907 from Wellesley College, finishing her examinations from years sooner. In 1911, she turned into the Curator of Astronomical Photographs at Harvard, and after three years, she turned into a privileged individual from the Royal Astronomical Society in the U.K. Regardless of these distinctions, Annie and her female associates were frequently scrutinized for working, as opposed to being housewives, and were regularly come up short on for extended periods and repetitive work. Notwithstanding analysis, Annie endured, and her vocation prospered. In 1921, she was among the main ladies to get a privileged doctorate from an European college when the Dutch college Groningen University granted her a privileged degree in math and cosmology. After four years, she was granted a privileged doctorate by Oxford †making her the primary lady to get a privileged doctorate of science from the tip top college. Annie likewise joined the suffragist development, supporting for women’s rights and, explicitly, the expansion of the option to cast a ballot; the option to decide in favor of all ladies was at last won in 1928, eight years after the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Annie’s work was noted for being amazingly quick and exact. At her pinnacle, she could characterize 3 stars for every moment, and she grouped around 350,000 through the span of her profession. She additionally found 300 variable stars, five novas, and one spectroscopic double star. In 1922, the International Astronomical Union formally received Cannons heavenly arrangement framework; it is as yet utilized, with just minor changes, right up 'til the present time. Notwithstanding her work on orders, she filled in as a kind of minister inside the stargazing field, helping fashion organizations among associates. She accepted a comparable job for the cosmology field’s open confronting work: she composed books introducing stargazing for open utilization, and she spoke to proficient ladies at the 1933 World’s Fair. Retirement and Later Life Annie Jump Cannon was named the William C. Bond Astronomer at Harvard University in 1938. She stayed in that position before resigning in 1940 at 76 years old. In spite of being formally resigned, in any case, Annie kept on working in the observatory. In 1935, she made the Annie J. Gun Prize to respect women’s commitments to the field of stargazing. She kept on helping ladies increase an a dependable balance and addition regard in established researchers, showing others how its done while likewise lifting up crafted by individual ladies in science. Annie’s work was proceeded by a portion of her partners. Most outstandingly, the popular space expert Cecilia Payne was one of Annie’s colleagues, and she utilized some of Annie’s information to help her momentous work that verified that stars are made basically out of hydrogen and helium. Annie Jump Cannon kicked the bucket on April 13, 1941. Her passing came after a long ailment and hospitalization. To pay tribute to her innumerable commitments to cosmology, the American Astronomical Society presents a yearly honor named for her-the Annie Jump Cannon Award-to female space experts whose work has been particularly recognized. Multiplexing - 1100 Words

Multiplexing (Term Paper Sample) Content: Multiplexing YourFirstName YourLastName University title Multiplexing   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   With the ever-increasing demand on bandwidth, multiplexing has become an important technique in signal transmission. Multiplexing is the combination of multiple streams of data for transmission on a shared medium. On the transmitting end is a device known as a multiplexer and on the receiving end is demultiplexer, which separates the combined signal into individual components (Communications Museum of Macao, 2014). There are four main types of multiplexing: â€Å"Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM), Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), Code Division Multiplexing (CDM), and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM),† (Rodriguez, 2009). Multiplexing reduces line costs and management costs.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   FDM is a method by which different frequencies are used to combine multiple streams of data for transmission over a common medium. Each data stream is assigned a discrete carrier frequency. The modulated carrier frequencies are then combined for transmission. This multiplexing technique is commonly used in radio and television broadcast industry. Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a variant of FDM that is used in optical fiber. The different light spectrums are of different colors. By WDM, the spectrums are used to modulate different streams of data, which are then combined for transmission through a common fiber optic cable. In WDM, prisms are used for multiplexing and demultiplexing (Thakur, n.d)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), each data stream is assigned a time slot in a set. A fixed sequence of time slots is then transmitted over a single channel. TDM is done in a round robin manner to ensure all the streams of a data set are efficiently transmitted. Code Division Multiplexing (CDM) is used in cellular telephone systems and som e satellite communication. In this technique, each sender is assigned a stream of uniquely generated binary code. The unique codes are then transmitted over the same medium.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In the absence of multiplexing, users at separate locations in need of communication would have to employ several lines of communication for transmission of different data. This would be costly in terms of infrastructure and even transmission management. Such architecture would also be complex and hard to manage. Use of a given multiplexing method minimizes the cost of transmission lines and simplifies line management.    Remember your Nanosecond   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Time is a valuable resource. The evolution of computers comes with sophisticated processors with extremely fast processing speeds. Grace Hopper illustrated the value of a nanosecond with an interesting analogy; termed as â€Å"Remember your Nanosecond,† (Hoff, 2012)   Ho pper is credited as among the pioneer computer scientist to write the first computer compiler (Szczys, 2012). Even though a nanosecond is a tiny fraction of time, it cannot be neglected in present-day computing and information technology.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In her quest to elaborate on the understanding of a nanosecond, Hopper developed an exciting illustration. She sourced for a piece of wire whose length was equivalent to the distance that light can travel in a nanosecond. The wire was of a portable length of 11.8 inches (Hoff, 2012). She further illustrated the significance of a microsecond presenting a piece of wire whose length was equivalent to the distance covered by light in a microsecond, 984 feet. In this illustration, the wire was still portable but bulkier than that of a nanosecond. Hopper further reiterated the importance of a microsecond by relating it to necklace worn by a programmer. She suggested that every programmer wears a necklace of a microseconds worth of wire, hence, a programmer should understand what he/she is wasting when a microsecond is wasted (Hoff, 2012).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In today’s computers, with a clock speed of 3.06 GHz, there is a 33 nanoseconds tick separation. This speed would be equivalent to 3.73 inches of light travel. Sophisticated microcontrollers and microprocessors with capability to process data in nanoseconds have been developed. In a billionth of a second, computers are capable of executing a series of instructions. To comprehend the high processing speeds, the concept of â€Å"Remember Your Nanosecond† is crucial. Further advancements are being made, in the information technology industry, to accelerate the processing capacities of computers further.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   A nanosecond is a very significant unit of time in computing. At a mouse click or link click, computers can return results in a tiny amount of time. Effo rts are even being geared towards enhancing human-computer experience by ensuring limited processing speeds. Importance of Standards and the OSI Model in Today’s Internet   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Standards are of great importance in software and hardware design and implementation. Given that there are different vendors of software and hardware components, establishment of a set of standards is important is ensuring interoperability. Standardization also fosters specialization and leads to accelerated evolution in information technology. A system developer can use the technologies of others and then focus on the improvement of a specific component rather than developing a whole system from scratch.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The OSI model presents a standard that can allow communication and sharing of data on the internet. The architecture specifies the protocols to be used at every abstraction level. The seven layers are â€Å"the applic ation layer, presentation layer, session layer, transport layer, network layer, data link layer, and physical layer (Simoneau, 2006). Data is encapsulated as it goes down the layers in the sending device.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The OSI model supports network interconnection in today’s internet. It describes open systems of interfaces and protocols that fosters interoperability of computer systems from different vendors. Secondly, the OSI standard promotes productive co-operation among globally competing vendors. The model establishes a framework for system development that the competing parties must observe in order to develop hardware or software that is compatible on the internet. The model is a general model. It can be applied across electronic devices, electromagnetic media, and...

Personal Statement On Health Improvement Plan - 989 Words

For the very first time in my life, I had executed a series of behavior changes in order to lose fifteen pounds by this semester. I am pleased and more than grateful to see that my customized plan is successful, and took effect in different aspects of my well-being. â€Å"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become†, I believe this quote by Carl Jung encapsulated why my health improvement plan would work – determination incorporated into a personalized plan. Hereinafter, I would like to discuss in details what and why had my behavior changes improved both my short-term and long-term health. I followed the Copenhagen diet – a thirteen-day diet to lose weight and improve metabolism. I started this diet on the start of semester, giving myself a week time to bid farewell to my ravenous appetite, before disciplining myself to go through the diet. It was extremely difficult for the first few days, I was constantly hungry and was craving for snacks between meals. I wasn’t able to strictly follow what is written on the menu, and I irresistibly ate between meals for several days when I was famished. Fortunately, I had been able to resist the temptations of junk foods – foods containing excessive calories, fat, sugar and salt. I only ate fruits or muesli when I was feeling hungry. These acts of violation subsided completely on the fourth day, and I started to get use to a reduced daily calorie intake. Throughout this thirteen days, I generally had a steady loss of one poundShow MoreRelatedStrategic Management Of Health Care Organization1583 Words   |  7 P ages Personal Strategic Management Plan Ms. Bharati Kusoji Strategic Management in Health care organization Professors Name Professor Mirjana Zivkovic Professor Josh Hyatt United States University San Diego, USA July 18th, 2015 Table of Contents Introduction †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦..3 Current Roles†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦3 Personal Vision Statement†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ 4 Personal Mission Statement†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Read MoreEssay On Health Care Development1509 Words   |  7 PagesA Proposed Healthcare Development: A Step Down Unit I have brought forward a plan that has been developed with the purpose to promote successful discharges of senior patients who have been admitted to the hospital because they have suffered from an acute illness. A Brief Note On The Second World War - 1634 Words

Project HERS The Second World War began four years ago, with Adolf Hitler’s Holocaust starting but two years into it. Under his regime, anti-Semitism was and still is the law—no man, woman, and child of lesser Aryan blood can live, and his reasons for the persecution of such people are still widely debated. However, there is a possible solution: Sigmund Freud and his theories. One of his theories suggests a division of the human psyche into three parts: the superego, ego, and id. These Freudian terms and their functions form the basis of the project HERS. To understand HERS, you must be acquainted with a condition linked directly to it, Dissociative Identity Disorder. DID is present and latent in every individual from the day they are†¦show more content†¦To make a moot point, it is even debatable whether HERS is a hereditary condition or not. The only other explanation for Hitler’s reasons behind the Holocaust, other than the â€Å"stab in the back myth†, is that he is a HERS acting under the influence of his id. Where there is dislike and revulsion, the id fans the flames into those of hatred. Where there is pride, the id makes it unquenchable and unreasonable. To win this war, the Allies need to break one of the links in the Axis military alliance—Germany and its dictator, Adolf Hitler. Dr. Foothills Freed, Allies Scientist November 3, 1943 All that was planned came to fruition today. The village of Imber on the Salisbury Plain was evacuated yesterday to be used as a training site for the British. The children, still in their seats when the evacuation was conducted, were swept away to Palmyra Atoll as planned. All of the inhabitants had been evacuated a year ago due to the war, and any traces of civilization were easily erased. It was the ideal setting for Project HERS, in not only its isolative setting, but the surroundings. Supply Chain Management Issues in the Caseâ€Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: What Is the Supply Chain Management Issues in the Case? Answer: Introduction In this era of globalization, supply chain management can be considered as a key organizational function. The focus on supply chain helps the organizations to save cost and improve profitability. In fact, the large organizations have realized that supply chain management could also be a source of competitive advantage for firms. This is one of the reasons that organizations have a single objective of supply chain optimization as a continuous process within the organization. Adebanjo Laosirihongthong (2016) highlighted that the supply chain management system should be established as an open system in which different stakeholders can contribute. Authors further extended that implementing the Open Systems Theory can be a challenge, however, the adoption of an Open System is a worthy approach due to the advantages this approach provides to supply chain management. For example, an organization that implements and uses an open system is better suited to adopt new changes in the organizatio nal environment and changes that can affect the social, economic, or cultural nature (Tatoglu Bayraktar, 2016). The objective of this paper is to discuss the case study of Zara Inc. The paper would discuss the supply chain management issues in the case and based on the problems the paper would also discuss some of the solutions for Zara Inc. A brief organizational background and the background of the case can be discussed as: Organizational background/ Case background Zara is a multinational company in clothing and accessories industry. The company is headquartered in Spain. Zara was founded in the year 1974 and since then it has expanded across the globe. The company has more than 2000 stores in different parts of the world. Zara has its presence in developed nations like USA, Australia, etc. and the company is also present in the developing countries like India. Zara is known for its agile supply chain (Lengnick-Hall Lengnick-Hall, 2013). The case study highlights the part that the flexible and optimized supply chain is the key to success for Zara. The company is known to introduce the clothes with latest trends and fashion in the market. The shelf life of products of Zara is low and the consumers usually get access to latest clothes and accessories whenever they visit Zara. The company has also integrated its supply chain management with Information System (Cantwell, 2014). It helps the internal stakeholders of the company to minimize the lead -time in ordering, order fulfillment, inventory management etc. The case study mentions that Zara has its own spare capacity of warehouses, trucks, etc. It ensures that the wastage is minimal in the existing supply chain of Zara. The company has the ability to fasten the responsiveness of its supply chain, whenever needs. The case study mentions that its integrated supply chain management is its biggest strength. The analysis of Zara case suggests that there are not much of the issues in the existing supply chain of Zara (Surie Reuter, 2015). However, there is a scope of further optimization. The existing issues in the supply chain of Zara can be discussed as: Issues in the existing solutions The good thing about Zara is that it is able to maintain a lean supply chain. The lean supply chain and the agility in the supply chain are two biggest strengths of Zara (Sridharan Simatupang, 2013). However, some of the issues for Zara can be discussed as: Limited use of ERP system in supply chain management The case study mentions the use of hand held devices by the executives and store managers. However, one of the issues in the existing supply chain is the limited use of ERP systems. Zara is not able to completely utilize the benefits of ERP systems. The company does have an ERP implementation in place (Chidlow Ghauri, 2015). However, there is a need to further optimize the ERP system. The existing ERP system is used primarily for inventory management and order fulfillment. However, the modules like CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system are not used much by the company. There is a need of an integrated ERP system in place that spans over various organizational functions at Zara. It would ensure that Zara is further able to extend and optimize its supply chain that is already spread over number of nations. Lack of focus on six-sigma The organization does have a lean supply chain and the company does not have processes in place to minimize the wastage in the system. However, Zara still does not focus much on the six-sigma methods of supply chain optimization. With the focus on six-sigma, Zara would be able to further optimize its supply chain network. The use of six-sigma and lean methodology would enable Zara to further reduce the wastage in the system. The company may be required to make some initial investment towards lean and six-sigma. However, in long term, the benefits would help Zara to keep and optimized supply chain (Kocaoglu Gulsun, 2013). Scope of Optimization in warehousing management The existing supply chain of warehousing business of Zara is strong; however, there exist a scope of improvement. One of the scopes of optimization in the existing supply chain flow is the use of Information Systems like ERP systems. When it comes to Supply Chain Management (SCM), businesses need to interact with numerous suppliers and partners in order to obtain the raw materials and resources needed to bring finished goods to market. ERP plays a vital role in combating inefficiency; reducing waste and ensuring that workers are better able direct their efforts (Tatoglu Bayraktar, 2016). Environmental Impact of Zaras supply chain There is no doubt that Zara has a strong supply chain network in place. However, there exist environmental repercussions of Zaras supply chain network. The company is dependent on fossil fuels for transportation. There is a need for Zara to reduce its environmental impact. It is important that in this era of globalization, organizations should look for sustainable development (Zsidisin, 2012). The step towards the environment would be a first step for sustainable development. It is important that Zara must use green mechanism to optimize and elaborate its supply chain. The company can integrate with other vendors and players in the industry to learn industry best practices about supply chain management and logistics management. Dependency on suppliers Zara has tied up with number of suppliers across the globe. The company does have a supplier criteria in place. However, the over dependency of Zara on its suppliers place Zara at risk. Zara is a very large retailer in world and it cannot afford to lose its credibility due to dependency on suppliers. However, in the end Zara is depend on suppliers to get quality raw materials. Therefore, it is important that Zara must have good relationship with its suppliers. The existing issues with suppliers is that Zara is not able to check the quality of material from all the suppliers. The organization does have the system of quality audit, wherein it would, at random, make inspection of supplies. However, this system must be improved to increase the quality check of material procured from suppliers. It would also help Zara to streamline its operations and save the cost. Logistics Management strategies to improve the business It would be correct to say that logistics management is the backbone of Zara. Therefore, steps should be taken to improve the logistics management (Santacreu-Vasut Shenkar, 2014). The key strategies for Zara to overcome the supply chain and logistics management issues can be discussed as: Effective supplier selection mechanism One of the bottleneck for Zara is heavy dependency on suppliers. Zara has tied up with number of suppliers across the globe. The company does have a supplier criteria in place. However, the over dependency of Zara on its suppliers place Zara at risk. The recommended supplier selection strategy for Zara would be to use weighted method to select suppliers. The company should have various parameters that it uses to select the supplier (Brannen Piekkari, 2014). The company would rate the suppliers (on a scale of 1 to 10) and based on all the parameters, a weighted index is calculated. The three steps involved in the supplier selection method can be discussed as: Supplier matrix development A sample matrix to select the supplier can be shown as: Parameter Supplier 1 Supplier 2 Supplier 3 Supplier n Cost 1.0 2.0 3.0 7.0 Quality 4.0 4.0 6.0 4.0 On Time delivery 5.0 6.0 7.0 2.0 Market Reputation 3.0 3.0 3.0 3.0 Relationship 6.0 7.0 4.0 4.0 Credibility 7.0 8.0 4.0 3.0 Finances 6.0 5.0 3.0 3.0 Reliability 3.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 Assigning weight to different parameters Parameter Supplier 1 Supplier 2 Supplier 3 Supplier n Weight Cost 1.0 2.0 3.0 7.0 0.2 Quality 4.0 4.0 6.0 4.0 0.2 On Time delivery 5.0 6.0 7.0 2.0 0.2 Market Reputation 3.0 3.0 3.0 3.0 0.1 Relationship 6.0 7.0 4.0 4.0 0.05 Credibility 7.0 8.0 4.0 3.0 0.1 Finances 6.0 5.0 3.0 3.0 0.05 Reliability 3.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 0.1 Computing the supplier net score The table with the weighted average and final score of suppliers can be shown as: Parameter Supplier 1 Supplier 2 Supplier 3 Supplier n Weight Cost 1.0 2.0 3.0 7.0 0.2 Quality 4.0 4.0 6.0 4.0 0.2 On Time delivery 5.0 6.0 7.0 2.0 0.2 Market Reputation 3.0 3.0 3.0 3.0 0.1 Relationship 6.0 7.0 4.0 4.0 0.05 Credibility 7.0 8.0 4.0 3.0 0.1 Finances 6.0 5.0 3.0 3.0 0.05 Reliability 3.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 0.1 Net Score 3.9 4.5 4.65 3.95 1 The above table show that supplier # 3 is the preferred supplier for Zara. Actually, this procedure should be repeated for number of suppliers and based on the procedure, a pool of supplier should be selected. Integration of ERP with supply chain The new or recommended supply chain management focuses on the integration of supply chain management with the ERP system of the company. It would be correct to say that the technology and information systems like ERP system can really add to the strength and agility of existing supply chain of Zara (Leuschner Rogers, 2013). In general, the integration of Supply chain management and ERP allows manufacturing and distribution businesses the ability to gain greater visibility into all operations while increasing speed, efficiency and overall customer satisfaction (Fawcett Ellram, 2014). The proposed structure of integrated supply chain with ERP is focused on three pillars or three drivers. These drivers can be highlighted as: Reducing waste in the system and driving efficiency Cost savings Employee satisfaction and improved customer feedback The proposed ERP implementation is one on the lines of above drivers. It is suggested that Zara should get the ERP implemented from an external vendor that can manage the challenges that rise from ERP implementation (Stadtler, 2015). The integration of both systems (ERP and Supply Chain Management Systems) may pose some unique challenges for Zara. It is in the companys best interest to ensure that the leaders and your staff fully understand the role of ERP within the SCM process. It is important that the company must understand the risk and benefits before integrating its ERP system and SCM system (Qrunfleh Tarafdar, 2015). The targeted or the proposed high-level view of the systems at Zara can be shown as: Strong leadership to manage change management The integration of above recommendations would certainly bring certain changes at Zara. Leaders who can come up with creative ways to view the real challenges of their organizations and present them can then have the power to change those issues that others are overlooking. It would be correct to say that the vision of a leader to expand the function of a manager would be an excellent benefit to any organization. Leaders are always looking for ways to improve what they make and how they make it (Kolk, 2015). Managers administer the goals and direction of their boss. They focus on controlling costs and obtaining personal goals (Kolk, 2015). Having a manager that has the ability to look to the future and made decisions on how to keep production fresh, relevant to the current and future market and expand to new possibilities and maintain the daily administrative duties as well would serve as a dual role of leader/manager. Focus on key metrics It is suggested that Zara should have key metrics in place to measure the ROI of supply chain. Metrics in the supply chain management field helps illuminate areas within the business so that leaders can properly approach how to make the supply chain better, make individuals better and make the organization better. This helps employees to be less resistant and more open to change or contributing to the task and goals of the organization. Leaders also foster innovation in groups (Caprar Devinney, 2015). This allows followers and organizations to achieve the strategic vision. Control policies for logistics management, operations management and supply chain management It is important that Zara should use control policies to manage both its internal and external environment. One of the core control policies for Zara is to use benchmarking. With the use of benchmarking, the company would be able to use the control mechanism as compared to the industry best players (Wisner Tan, 2015). The company can benchmark its operations against the established players. At the same time, it is critical that the company should be quick enough to change its organizational culture to suit the external policies. Another key control policy for Zara would be to establish the SMART objectives with respect to the supply chain of warehousing. The use of SMART objectives would enable the company to have short term and long-term objectives in place. For example, the company can have the SMART goal to reduce its IT support cost by 5% in next year (Zander McDougall-Covin, 2015). With this objective in place, the company can have specific control mechanism to address this objective. Conclusion The above report discusses the case study of Zara Inc. The report discusses the key issues in the existing supply chain of Zara and based on these issues, the report discusses some of the logistics management strategies for Zara. Based on above discussion, it can be said that, that the way forward for Zara is the effective use of technology. The immediate thing for Zara would be to do an assessment, wherein it would analyze its supply chain from a technology point of view. Zara can take the help of some external consultants to complete this assessment task as the internal resources of Zara may not have the required skills and competencies to perform this assessment. It is also important that Zara must include key stakeholders together while doing the assessment. The assessment about the current supply chain management strengths and weakness would enable the company to develop effective future strategy about supply chain management, operations management and logistics management. Religion, The State And Sovereignty Essays - Authority, Sovereignty

Religion, The State And Sovereignty Religion, the State and Sovereignty The influence of religion on humankind can be traced back to the first records of history. Religion has served as a pillar of strength to some and binding chains to others. There are vast amounts of information and anthropological studies revealing the interaction of religion and humankind. However, for the purposes of this paper, the time periods of study will be broken up into three sections. Each section will give a general description of how religion affected the institution of the state and its Sovereignty in a Euro-centric perspective. The first period is the early period, which will encompass from Christianity and the Roman Empire to the Medieval times (approx. 311 to 1100 A.D.). The second period will include the Renaissance, the Reformation to the Treaty of Westphalia (1101 to 1648 A.D.). The third and increment of history will range from 1649 to 1945 A.D. The date 311 A.D. marks the issuing of the Edict of Toleration for Christians. This date is important because it symbolizes national acceptance of Christianity, and planted its roots as a political institution. Later the Roman Empire on the verge of internal collapse acknowledged the importance of Christianity and used it to hold together the remnants of it former self. This adoption of Christianity took form and eventually became the Catholic church. The church became intermingled with politics and became a strong entity. The policies delivered from the church had more authority than the local rulers and magistrates of the developing feudal system. For example, St. Augustine wrote about war and what justified its enactment against fellow men. This policy was followed and adhered to for hundreds of years after St. Augustine wrote it. Another example, is the use of the Bible as a guideline for establishing governing systems. Scripture portrayed God as choosing the king of the people. The pope, being God's representative was then given the authority to crown the king. This crowning process gave the pope large influence in the political arena. This ritual continued for a number of centuries. The Crusades, which occurred around 1100 A.D., played a crucial role in challenging the church's authority. The pope identifying the spread of Islam as evil requested all of Europe embark on a Crusade to defeat the infidels. As the battles were fought, great treasures were found in the form of books and knowledge. These books were crude translations of old Greek texts, containing information which would eventually produce the waning of Church authority in the future. The Renaissance marked the beginning of intellectual re-birth. Writers such as Dante, Machiavelli, Guiarccidini, Vitoria, etc., all attempting to reform and some even contest church dominance. Dante in his imaginative work Inferno writes of hell which he envision is the pope's final destination. Machiavelli takes a more direct role classifying the actions of a prince to be above morality and ultimately above the Church. He continues the affront by classifying a human character of virtu as being completely centered around man (humanism). The Raison D' Tat is supreme especially in terms of the church belligerence. In the middle of the Renaissance, the Church was dealt a deadly blow from which it would never recover. This assault came via Martin Luther. His work, 95 Thesis, marked the beginning of the Reformation. This movement split the church into Catholic and Protestant sects. It marked the beginning of a bloody period which virtually split Europe in half. Examples of the conflict raged between Protestants and Catholics from the great slaughter of Protestants in Paris 1572 A.D. (7000 dead) to the Thirty Years War. With the Church in disarray, freedom was given to the state to begin to develop. During this period of Renaissance the political identity was going through a tremendous transformation. This transformation took form in what is called Absolutism. Princes began to tolerate less and less manipulation from the church. The political entity in the form of monarchy began to wean itself from the Church for its legitimacy and looked toward its own power. Other writers began to rise and discuss issues of sovereignty and the state. Thomas Hobbes discusses the state and refers to it as Leviathan which is the concurring title of his

Satirical Shows and Internet Bloggers are the Fifth Estate Thesis

Satirical Shows and Internet Bloggers are the Fifth Estate - Thesis Example In the end, there were no death panels, but people still believe that there are. Witness also the issue of the Obama citizenship. Internet bloggers will not leave the issue alone, which has made problems for the President, even though there is no basis for claiming that Obama is not a citizen. Inaccurate information can spread very quickly, even more quickly than in the mainstream press, so one viral rumor can cause a lot of damage very quickly. That said, there is value to this type of information spread, and the pros and cons are what this paper will be concentrated upon. Discussion According to Arthur Hayes (2008), citizen press critics, which are the citizens who blog, are to be defended as an effective democratic rabble that keeps the mainstream press in check. ... Dismissing the blogosphere as â€Å"some guy in his pajamas,† Jonathan Klein, the vice-president of the CBS News, stated â€Å"you couldn’t have a starker contrast between checks and balances and some guy in his pajamas in his living room stating what he thinks† (Dasselaar, 2006, p. 11). The press before these checks and balances was arrogant and dismissive of those with whom they disagreed. The press felt that their only checks and balances were the free market, and individuals were free to watch them or not, buy their newspapers and magazines or not. Monitors on what they reported were considered a violation of free speech (Hayes, 2008, p. 2). Even now, according to Hayes, these professional press critics, who are those that work for the mainstream press, are arrogant and dismissive of the citizen critics, who are the bloggers, stating that these bloggers are driven by ideology and threaten press freedom and democracy (Hayes, 2008, p. 2). Hayes essentially accu ses the professional press critics of democratic elitism. Democratic elitism means that the people are not to have a voice, even if they do play a role in the democracy. This is because the people – unsophisticated, irrational, and shortsighted – cannot be trusted to support democratic rights (Hayes, 2008, p. 2). Extrapolating this, the democratic elites believe that ordinary citizens do not have the right to press criticism, due to their lack of sophistication, education or training. Therefore, they are a threat to a stable democracy and the free press (Hayes, 2008, p. 2). Hayes believes just the opposite – these individuals are the backbone of democracy, and they are strengthening democracy by criticizing the institutions that affect us all and the officials who govern us. Moreover, they

High School Cliques Essay Example for Free

High School Cliques Essay The school environment causes natural polarization of peoples with similar backgrounds, attitudes, or any other factors that would form certain peer groups, or ‘cliques’. This is particularly observable in the High School setting, as the predominant social groups are composed of adolescents who are beginning their socialization process. This socialization forms various groupings or factions that are highly noticeable in High School. The modern media, who continually builds on and establish the perceived cliques and groups in movies, shows, and other media venues, is repeatedly echoing the reality. This has created stereotypes of High School cliques, such as: (1) the popular group, (2) athletes, (3) nerds, (4) racial segregation, (5) pop-culture groups like rockers and hip-hop, (6) outcasts, and (7) other groups. The converging elements of a particular faction can be varied and numerous. These cliques can be students who eat together, or hang out with each other after class. Racial profile can also be a strong factor, as with the social class and background. Even personal preference and culture can bring together different kinds of peoples. High school youth converge because of the reason that they find something in common with the group that they are with. The first clique in High School is the popular student. Usually they are the student leaders or even cheerleaders and well-known members of the student body. They can be socially advantaged as they are driving newer cars or organizing fancier parties. They can be part of the group on the merit that they are simply popular in the batch. These students are usually the first ones remembered and recalled in reunions or gatherings. They are seen as role models, or at the other extreme, a source of jealousy and hatred. The second group, the athletes, can overlap with this first group, because basketball and football players can be highly popular in High School. Another High School clique are the nerds, who are the most participative in class or gets the highest grades in any subject. They would congregate in the canteen and converse about math or politics or any other academic topic. They are stereotyped as being shy and wearing big glasses, and are very grade conscious and studious. Apart from this group, other cliques can be divided according to culture lines, like rockers or hip-hops. They are usually secluded and non-conventionalists, and would gather on their own parties and gatherings. Another notable group are outcasts, who are usually the but of jokes, and would have severe emotional and psychological problems. Some would also note that racial background would be a strong determinant in formation of cliques. Asians or African Americans or Caucasians would most likely hang-out with each other, which does not imply discrimination, but merely cultural identification. They also form different and very distinguishable cliques in High School. High School is the stage of life wherein social interaction is at its most dynamic, as young adolescents are placed in a social environment outside their homes, and forced to polarize into different groups. Although these High School cliques can be regarded as mere stereotypes that may not always necessary be apparent in a social context, there is a ring of truth in the observations. Since the school is a hodgepodge of different backgrounds and cultures, it is natural for the youth to find people they are familiar and comfortable with. This reality, coupled with media hype, reinforces the perception that different High School cliques do exist.

Ben Franklin: Early Life In his many careers as a printer, moralist, essayist, civic leader, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, and philosopher, for later generations of Americans he became both a spokesman and a model for the national character. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on Jan. 17, 1706, into a religious Puritan household. His father, Josiah, was a candlemaker and a skillful mechanic. His mother, Abiah Ben’s parents raised thirteen children--the survivors of Josiah’s seventeen children by two wives (#1). Printer & Writer Franklin left school at ten years old when he was pressed into his father's trade. At twelve Ben was apprenticed to his half brother James, a printer of The New England Courant. He generally absorbed the values and philosophy of the English Enlightenment. At the age of 16, Franklin wrote some pieces for the Courant signed "Silence Dogood," in which he parodied the Boston authorities and society (#3). At one point James Franklin was imprisoned for his liberal statements, and Benjamin carried on the paper himself. Having thus learned to resist oppression, Benjamin refused to suffer his brother's own domineering qualities and in 1723 ran away to Philadelphia (#1). Soon Franklin found a job as a printer. After a year he went to England, where he became a master printer, sowed some wild oats, amazed the locals with his swimming feats, and lived among inspiring writers of London. By 1726 Franklin was tiring of London (#1). He considered becoming an itinerant teacher of swimming, but when a Quaker merchant by the name of Thomas Denham offered him a clerkship in his store in Philadelphia, he decided to return home (#5). Returning to Philadelphia in 1726, he soon owned a newspaper, the Pennsylvania Gazette, and began to print Poor Richard's Almanac. In the Pennsylvania Gazette, a citizen asked editor Franklin the following question: "If A found out that his neighbor B was sleeping with his wife, was he justified in telling B's wife, and persuading her to seek a little revenge with A?" The editor's response: "If an ass kicks me, should I kick him again? (#4)" His business expanded further when he contracted to do the public printing of the province, and established partnerships with printers in other colonies. He also operated a bookshop and became clerk of the Pennsylvania Assembly and postmaster of Philadelp... ...eek. These virtues include temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquillity, chastity, and humility. The Autobiography is not the full story of Franklin’s life. It terminates approximately in his fifty-third year, before he became America’s greatest diplomat. Poor Richard was an uneducated but experienced homespun philosopher, created and edited by Ben Franklin from 1732-1757. Although Poor Richard of the early almanacs was a dim-witted and foolish astronomer, a round character soon replaced him who was a rich source of prudent and clever aphorisms on the value of economy, hard work, and the simple life. Molson coors

Countries around the world has indeed shied away from its isolationist tendencies and has embraced wholeheartedly the precepts of globalization, China is not a stranger to this phenomenon. With over a billion people, it has somehow developed into a lucrative market for investment. Owing to its potential, China is considered as the largest beer market in the world. Breweries worldwide are vying to be part of this huge market, and Molson Coors is in a position to be a major player. But caution is expressed because China is a complex market and product demand would vary from region to region. So if the desire of Molson Coors is to saturate the market in a nationwide level, then they need to be extra judicious in their marketing thrusts. Part of the government’s protectionist measures is to allow foreign investors to have a manufacturing and marketing agreement with a local counterpart. In so doing, products could reach consumers in all levels of Chinese society. In line with this policy, Molson Coors in August 2001 formed the subsidiary – Coors Beer Beverages (Suzhou) Co.,Ltd., the purpose being to distribute Coors Beer products into China. A brewing agreement has also been inked with Lion Nathan Beer and Beverages (Suzhou) Co. Ltd. in October 2001. Threats: As in all potential markets there will always be threats as interested investors and companies jockey for position and share in the manufacturing and beer distribution business. And since the market is still young and so huge, there will always be room for everybody. Depending on each company’s strategy, the one that can provide consumers the most value for their money will get the lion’s share of the market. Competition has started to manifest its ugly head as major players in the beer market are now poised to increase their market share. Recently though more breweries are coming into China (50 are reported recently). This is in addition to Budweiser, the current market leader; Carlsberg; Anheuser-Busch’s; SABMiller; Harbin Brewery and Scottish & Newcastle. Even with the frantic activity now experienced in China, the local beer market remains to be controlled by domestic players. This makes it a fragmented market and totally needs infusion of massive international capital which could come in the form of joint venture agreements. As a form of encouragement, China’s per capita beer consumption remains to be low – meaning the market has still so much room for development. The Monroe Doctrine And The United States Of America

Since the early 1800’s the history of the world has been greatly influenced by the young nation of the United States of America. One of the earliest forms of this influence came on Dec. 2, 1823 in President James Monroe’s annual message to congress. In his address, he outlined his beliefs on keeping European powers out of Latin America for the good of the US. This section of his speech became known as The Monroe Doctrine. About 80 years later, President Theodore Roosevelt built on top of the ideas in the Monroe Doctrine in his address to congress on Dec. 6, 1904. This is known as The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, in which he describes his intentions of keeping the sovereignty of Latin American nations by force if necessary. Although Roosevelt directly links his ideas to the Monroe Doctrine, along with its similarities it also has a few key differences. During his address President Monroe stated, â€Å"†¦we should consider any attempt on their p art to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous†. Referring to European nations interfering in Latin America, this shows his intentions during his speech; the countries of Latin America are all in the very early stages of their independence and are vulnerable to being taken over. Due to their position in proximity to the US, having a European nation in power would directly put the US in danger. What will the situation for renewable energy in Europe be in 2030 Free Essays

Since the beginning of the twenty-first century and even a bit before that, great technological advances have been made which are allowing more and more to extract energy out of naturally occuring phenomenons. These include for example sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. The use of non-renewable energies such as fossil fuels is politically and economically defined just as the use of renewable energies are. We will write a custom essay sample on What will the situation for renewable energy in Europe be in 2030? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Even though some more environmentally-friendly option might be available to us through renewable energies, our government might still choose to keep using non-renewable energies that are threatening to the environment such as fossil fuels, for political or economical reasons (the two being usually co-dependent). As citizens, it is out of our power which of those two energies our leaders decide to consume first. The fact that renewable energies might be readily available does not necessarily mean that they will be used. However, the political and economical reasons that can be behind the reason of a choice like this are out of the scope of this essay. The way Europe will use renewable energies in the future and in 2030 will depend on many factors. First of all, technology plays a vital role in this, as without it, renewable energies could not be extracted from the energy sources, or they could but with very little efficiency. The more advanced the technology the more likely we are to turn to renewable energies for our energy needs. In order for this to be worthwhile, the production cost of the used technologies must be much lower than the value of energy that will be extracted with them. Some of the currently used equipment used to extract energy from the environment are very expensive and must assure an interesting return on investment before anyone will consider using them. Let’s take the example of wind turbines. The usual 2 megawatt commercial turbine costs around 3 million euros per piece, even though they get cheaper all the time. Considering an annual mean speed of wind of 5 meters per second (pretty low), the traditional 2MW wind turbine will give a return on investment of 3. 8% after a year. This means that there is gonna be profit already less than a year after installation. The average lifespan of wind turbines being around twenty years, the return on investment at the end of that period is very profitable. We can understand why Europe has more than one hundred thousand wind turbines in 2013. In 2013 wind turbine generated electricity is providing more than 8% of the European electricity consumption. A European Environment Agency report shows that wind turbine generated electricity could exceed by three times Europe’s expected demand of electricity in 2020. This shows that the capacity of electricity production with the use of renewable energies is practically illimited, and that by using only wind turbines (provided more are installed) we can easily provide enough electricity to all of earth’s inhabitants. And this is only through one source of renewable energy (wind). It is important to remember, though obvious, that the amount of wind plays an important role in wind turbine electricity production. That means that windy places with less potential capacity in terms of watts (usually holding less turbines) can produce more electricity than places that hold more turbines but on which there is little wind. Indeed, in 2011, Spain had more electricity production through wind turbines than Germany. This shows that with renewable energies, there is more than the machine we are using. The environmental condition has to be there as well, and so in the case of an unprobable geological event, some of our means of gathering renewable energies might be rendered inefficient and costly. When it comes to sun and wind, there is little to worry about though. On another aspect, the way humans will relate to nature in the future is also a very big factor of our future use or lack of use of renewable energies. Are we going to constantly grow more respectful of nature of less respectful of nature? In 2030, what will be more important for us, preserving a clean earth for our future generations or being willing to trade hurting the planet for cash? As mentioned earlier, there may be dozens of political considerations that get in the way of those decisions, and that us as citizens, are not even aware of. However, considering that our technology becomes constantly more efficient and cheaper, the most logical course of action would be that we begin to use it more and more in every area of our life, including in the extraction of renewable energies. To conclude, there is very little doubt that the situation in Europe concerning renewable energies will have improved much from today. The rate at which technology has evolved in the past years, the rate at which wind turbines and other ecological equipments have been implanted, can only promise a greener future. The numbers are also very encouraging and reassuring, as they seem to show that with the right technology we can almost unlimitedly extract renewable energies. As the amount of non-renewable and polluting energies will be scarce by 2030, we will be forced to put to use the solutions that we have already found. On top of this, as the people who used to have all of the non-renewable ressources do not have it anymore, they no longer either have the money that went along with it. And without the money, their influence on politicians and governments will be gone as well. Instead, it is likely that the wind turbines, the solar cells, the hydroelectric turbines, and the other devices will be paid and installed by all of us, and then the profit will equally get back to all of us. How to cite What will the situation for renewable energy in Europe be in 2030?, Papers

Customers Believe on Company Advertising or Online Reviews

Question: What Do Customers Believe More- Company Advertising or Online Reviews? Answer: Introduction The decision to purchase by a consumer is at the mercy of many factors and belief ranks high up there with them. Be it through company adverting or online reviews, the creation of brand awareness, and attraction of new customers is more or less at the center of any business's daily schedule and this makes more companies look for ways of enhancing consumer beliefs. As a matter of fact, more and more companies are looking to establish with absolute certainty what aspect of the above mentioned is more believable to customers. As such the following question begs: which is more believable to customers? Company advertising or online reviews? There are different facts in this regard, and this paper will outline some of the views that have been put across in association with the above-mentioned forms of marketing in a bid to establish where the customers stand. To answer this question adequately, the following needs to answered: To what extent do consumers depend on either advertising or onl ine reviews when making decisions about their products? Company advertising utilizes many avenues- from traditional to digital to mobile to social media- taking advantage of the marketing communication means of audio or visual in promotion or sale of a product by a business. Company advertising takes various forms currently: advertisements on TV, brand sponsorships, ads in newspapers and magazines, billboards, radios, TV program product placement among others. Worryingly, a few analysts have expressed that when it comes to advertising, people will always look at it with a jaded eye despite the various mediums available. According to a study conducted by a research firm named Lab 42, 76% of the interview population expressed that company advertising is generally "very exaggerated" or "somewhat exaggerated." Further, in a rather particular industry, 87%of the respondents were in agreement that more than half of cleaning advertisements are photoshopped. Besides, in an area that continues to be a part of advertising in the media concerning food products, 96% of respondents expressed that over 50% of weight-related advertisements are photoshopped. These figures are emphasized by the study conducted by the BBB in 2013 outlining the perceptions of customers as per the claims made in ads. Only 3 percent attested to ads being accurate, 19% agreed that ads are very exaggerated, with 21% and 57% expressing that ads were somewhat correct and exaggerated respectively. Online reviews, hugely constituted by the opinions of consumers posted online, has been on the rise over the years with some studies putting forth that more and more customers are relying on the earlier mentioned before making purchase decisions. This has been further contributed to by the recent shift to online shopping by customers. According to a Nielsen online survey carried out in 2013, 68% of the respondents in the inquiry suggested that they trusted consumer opinions posted online (Nielsen.com, 2017). Again, millions have been lured into areas that offer reviews to products for the promise of honesty, trustworthy opinions that is promoted by the online platforms. A report of a survey conducted by power reviews bearing the title The Power of Reviews outlined that approximately 94% percent of shoppers seek reviews despite having come across company advertising in their purchase journey with 86% believing that online reviews are a fundamental aspect of the process of decision-mak ing. Regardless, the danger of manipulations by businesses in an attempt to look good looms (Nielsen.com, 2017). Belief in whatever form of marketing is highly influenced by the amount of information on offer by the kind of marketing in question. In comparison, online reviews offer more information to customers as compared to company advertisements that mainly dwell on the catch from phrase to entice customers in the event the name of the brand is not too huge. An approval of a stranger who seemingly has very little to gain apart from the use of the product is more believable than the word of a company who is not only after promoting the product or brand but also looking to making a profit for the entity. A significant shift from the traditional platform of shopping to the online platform has contributed hugely to this change where it can be safely said that customers believe the online reviews than the company advertising. Online searches are more than ever integrated into our daily lives and this is evidenced by the over trillion searches processed by Google in 2014. This demonstrated the level of reliance people have on online review. There has been a prevalence of review sites on search results for brands and products, and an understanding of this points to how these reviews impact consumers in decision making. The major question asked in the Google review was "when making a major purchase such as an appliance, a smartphone, or even a car, how important are online reviews in your decision making?" There are various reasons attributed to this shift in customer belief in the marketing scene. First, certain commodities have time and time again warranted the second opinion, and therefore customers will not readily fall for what the company advertises. The most affected are the following areas: home services, restaurants, hotels and high priced items. Google. Inc (2017) posits that on overall, 54% of shoppers will not willingly withdraw their wallets without consulting with the reviews posted in different platforms online. In fact, 70% of customers accounted that they were more likely to buy a product if the online review platform they were using provided access to product reviews. This indicates that initial advertising by a company plays a little part in determining whether or not a customer will resort to purchasing a product. Second, it is conceivable to say that consumers believe online reviews because there are significant believable Consumer reviews (nearly 12 times more) than descriptions that come from manufacturers hugely taking the form of advertisements, according to a study of US internet users carried out by online video review site EXPO. Third, online reviews have an advantage over company advertising about the availability of both negative and positive reviews (Greenslade, 2017). This implies that consumer trust will be improved considerably by the negative opinions they read as it acts on credibility. By highlighting the flaws to a product credibility is optimized. Fourth, the manner in which larger public firms control public opinion significantly the flaws of a product through the online reviews lowers the amount of belief that is derived from the customers from the advertisings owing to the amount of money that is spent on such. Some consumers take unfairness and negative view in company a dvertising due to this as they purport dishonesty. Fifth, it is hard to overlook the fact that company advertisements are also doing a lot that enhances the beliefs of the customer in the information they offer towards making a purchase decision. These include the provision of evidence of materials that have been used in coming up with certain products, the performance evidence encompassing the achievements related to the use of the product and test evidence. Other aspects of the customer belief system that is normally worked up by company advertising thus making the numbers that will take the word of the advisors are, to start with, the use emotional ideas. Some user's customers find this more appealing as it touches on the perceived ways that the product will improve a person's life as opposed to an explanation of its features by the online reviews. Unlike company advertising, online reviews provide consumers with a sense of engagement- referred to as customer engagement- between them and the products. This is more pronounced in the latter than in the former. The availability of online review demonstrates the intensity of an individual's participation in and connection with an organization's offerings and organizational activities, which either the customer or the organization initiate. This leaves it more believable than company advertising. Lastly, by advertising companies leave customers with a single option of comparing products based on the wordings of the advertisements, some resorting for the prices range under the notion that you get what you pay for' (King, Racherla Bush, 2014). Online reviews have turned the tables by giving users a myriad of information sources most notably the peer-to-peer information and the unprecedented availability of expert point of view. Power is exerted by existing customers onto future custom ers. Come to think of it, what is more, believable between a catch-phrase and an opinion of a real user (Google. Inc 2017)? Conclusion Despite the facts as mentioned earlier, the question of what is believed more by customers between company advertising and online reviews remains a hard one considering that the question of what is real and what is fake engulfs both platforms of marketing (King, Racherla Bush, 2014). There have been instances where regulating bodies have accused online review sites of misleading the masses. A case example is when the Advertising Standard Authority in Britain alleged that TripAdvisor was misleading its consumers into believing that a majority if not all of its reviews were genuine i.e. were posted by real travelers. To this effect, there's a certain fraction of the populace that expresses differing sentiments towards online reviews. At the same time as they express the reliance on reviews, only 13 percent of consumers believe reviews are "very reliable." In particular, they're wary of business owners. Some 89 percent are privy to the notion that businesses write demeaning, reviews of competitors and 91 percent think business owners post fake, positive reviews of their businesses (Olenski, 2017). Regardless, it is evident that with the craze around online shopping a lot more customers will be utterly reliant on online reviews and constantly believe in it owing to the range of information it provides to the consumer.
